Ketamine for Depression

Treatment-resistant depression is a difficult problem to tackle. Many of my patients are taking conventional SSRI medications for depression, but many don’t tolerate them or say they don’t respond adequately.

Ketamine is a medication most commonly known for its dissociative properties, which in patients can produce a trance-like state. It’s used typically to provide anesthesia in short procedures.

A number of recent studies have shown ketamine may have application in treatment of depression.

Dr. Bing Wu is currently working with local pharmacies in Calgary on a compounded form of intranasal ketamine (nasal spray) that can be used to treatment depression. This page will be updated with new developments when they’re available.
